Huge thatched domes and structures made of purely organic material outline the heritage of Kasubi Tombs, a complex of four traditional royal tombs and a World Heritage Site. Spanning some 27 hectares (68 acres) the complex on the hilltop amidst farmland centers on the palaces of the kings of Buganda Kingdom. Built in 1882 and converted into the royal burial ground in 1884 (shortly after the British took over Egypt and Sudan), the complex houses tombs of four kings who reigned from the end of the 19th century to 1971. An important political and spiritual center for the Ganda people, the site also houses a museum of the Baganda civilization dating to the 13th century. Make Kasubi Tombs a centerpiece of your Kampala vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Kampala trip planner.
