See Africa's highest and most diverse population of primates at Kibale Forest National Park, a rainforest conservation area. Chimp-tracking tops the activities in the moist evergreen rainforest, which hosts 13 species of primates, including black and white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabey. Keep your eye out for the estimated 500 elephants, buffalos, leopards, and bush pigs that live on the 766 sq km (296 sq mi) grounds. Bird-watchers can delight in over 350 resident bird species, such as the olive-tailed cuckoo. Work out when and for how long to visit Kibale Forest National Park and other Fort Portal attractions using our handy Fort Portal holiday planning site.

The guides went out of their way to get you to the chimps but the whole experience was tainted by the sheer number of people doing it on the day. Our driver said he had never seen it so busy even in peak season. We counted in excess of 40 people and while we were split into smaller groups several groups would converge in a single area and gave the chimps little room to live normally. Although the chimps are used to humans it was clear to us on more than one occasion they were stressed by how close people were getting to try to take selfies. Numbers need to be controlled and more respect given to the animals ☹️
