Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.Do some cultural sightseeing at Hector Pieterson Museum and Memorial and Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct. Take a break from the city and head to Safaris and Horseback Africa. Explore Johannesburg's surroundings by going to Rustenburg (Sabai Jai & Zipline), Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre (in Hartbeespoort) and Pretoria (Voortrekker Monument, Rietvlei Nature Reserve, &more). There's still lots to do: examine the collection at Apartheid Museum, immerse yourself in nature at Alberts Farm, contemplate the long history of Mandela House, and visit Maboneng Precinct.
