Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Johannesburg: Ukutula Conservation Center (in Brits), Pretoria (National Library of South Africa, Kruger House Museum, &more) and Spas (in Benoni). There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Apartheid Museum, steep yourself in history at Mandela House, take an in-depth tour of Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, and try to win big at Emperors Palace.
