Johannesburg — 26 nights

City of Light

Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Attractions like Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct make great kid-friendly stops. Get out of town with these interesting Johannesburg side-trips: Hartbeespoort (Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, Elephant Sanctuary Hartbeesport Dam, &more), Pretoria (Hennops Hiking Trail, Statue of Nelson Mandela, &more) and Zipline (in Rustenburg). Spend the 24th (Sat) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. There's lots more to do: tour the pleasant surroundings at Lion and Safari Park, visit Maboneng Precinct, don't miss a visit to South Western Townships, and explore the fascinating underground world of Sterkfontein Cave.
