Johannesburg — 23 nights

City of Light

Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Change things up with these side-trips from Johannesburg: Marievale Bird Sanctuary (in Nigel), Zipline (in Rustenburg) and Hartbeespoort (Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary, Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre, &more). There's much more to do: examine the collection at Apartheid Museum, tour the pleasant surroundings at Ukutula Conservation Center, learn about all things military at South African National Museum of Military History, and pause for some photo ops at Voortrekker Monument.

If you are flying in from The Netherlands, the closest major aiports are OR Tambo International Airport and Pilanesberg International Airport. In July, plan for daily highs up to 22°C, and evening lows to 5°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 24th (Fri) early enough to travel back home.
