Zanzibar Spice Tour
The specs: Fusing a restored nineteenth-century Swahili sultan’s palace and Zanzibar’s first photographic studio, this multi-storied small hotel has an inner courtyard, eleven unique antiques-filled rooms, and one of Zanzibar’s best restaurants.Zanzibar Spice Tour is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.
The look: Romantic, with blue-, pink-, and violet-painted walls, rich textiles, deep baths, and high beds.
The experience: The Stone Town location means you’re surrounded by the sounds and smells of local life, but well-travelled guests—the list includes Matt Dillon and Juliette Binoche—embrace the feast for all senses and are not bothered by the lack of conventional amenities such as minibars and television. All suites have verandas, and each is so intriguingly decorated that there is no cause for the room envy typical of many converted courtyard houses. Conde Nast Hotlist 2012

We booked the tour with Mr Mitu. It was agreed beforehand that the tour would last from 9.30 till 13.30. It included the guide, entrance fee and lunch. For starters the driver asked to pay 3$ pp. extra because entrance was not included (a lie, but it started to get uncomfortable so we just paid). The tour was on a community farm which was basically a staged experience for tourists where you are guided from shop to shop and where you are expected to tip everyone involved in the, sometimes very awkward, 'experience'. We were finished quite quickly with the informational portion so were to be driven back to the city, skipping the included lunch. When Mr Mitu called he told me that the government told him he couldn't offer lunch and hung up the phone. We eventually received a plate of rice. Had to stop the guide because he walked away to leave us on the outskirts of town with the bill. DO NOT BOOK A TOUR HERE.
