Crossing the same river 25 times and ending at a waterfall, Meiringspoort slices through a gorge offering scenic views of intriguing rock formations and a mountain range, much of which is a listed World Heritage Site. The construction of the pass took place from 1856 to 1858 and proved to be quite an endeavor, since the area was prone to floods and landslides and the mountain seemed almost impenetrable. The engineer Andrew Bain--whose technique of cutting through large boulders was essential for the construction--named the pass after Petrus Johannes Meiring, a farmer who was the first person to pass through it in 1800.
