Create an itinerary including Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail
Drive on Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail and explore ancient rock formations that tell the story of the beginning of life on Earth, when the sun was pale and the atmosphere was toxic. Cutting through the mountains, the trail includes geosites from the Archaean geological period. Consult the information boards to recognize different geological elements, such as volcanic hailstones, piles of lava pillows, and one of the first signs of life on the planet--fossilized biomats in sandstone. The rocks also reveal ancient tidal patterns, as well as evidence of volcanic activity and huge asteroid impacts. There's a lot to see and learn, so pack a picnic lunch and make a full day trip out of it. PutBarberton Makhonjwa Geotrail into our Barberton trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Wonderful heritage site with many stop points. Self catering, make sure you bring enough utensils for outdoor cooking. No shops around, only local town. Breathtaking views
  • Although some people would to call it a Heritage Site... it's a pity that other people don't care!! The amount of bottles and rubbish strewn around, especially at the Green Stone view site, is a disaster! Could those people please stop and take their rubble home... OR PLEASE PUT IT IN ONE OF THE FIVE RUBBISH BINS! Please behave like a normal and educated human being, not as an animal!
