The country's highest basalt mountain, Pico de Sao Tome rises from the island's massive shield volcano. Although standing 2,024 m (6,640 ft) above sea level, the mountain is actually submerged another 1,000 m (3280 ft) and contains freshly formed rocks at the sea bed, some of which date back to 100,000 BCE. You can reach the summit on foot only, so pack up your hiking gear and consider hiring a guide to navigate the misty forests and grasslands. Along the way, you'll observe the thriving animal and plant life, including orchids, bamboo, tarantulas, and exotic birds. • We just wanted to warn everyone, that climbing Pico de São Tomé is extremely DANGEROUS UNDER WET CONDITIONS. You will find guides that bring you up there at any time of the year, so it is your responsibility to check. We had multiple, very dangerous situations on our hike due to bad weather, you cannot even imagine (Sept.21') The hike is very long and strenuous. If you just want to watch animals and plants, you might want to do a different tour.
  • It's beautiful in the rainforest, quiet away from the crowds, I was alone with a guide, the view was a bit foggy. But I also pretty much reached my limits, a 12-hour day tour is tough, mainly because of the climate and not enough fluids were organized (I was then without water for about 5 hours and especially on the descent, you always have to be on your guard, you can never really rest) not recommended for the inexperienced.
