Explore caves and waterfalls in lush urban greenery at Karura Forest, Nairobi's flagship preserve and a getaway from the bustling capital. Spanning 564 hectares (1,394 acres), this scenic forest interlaced with rivers features a bamboo grove and marshlands sheltering colobus monkeys, galagos, bushpigs, porcupines, and dik diks amidst shrubs and croton trees. Explore 50 km (31 mi) of well-maintained nature trails, with views of African olive trees and Uganda greenheart. See caves used by the Mau Mau rebels in their epic independence struggle against the British Empire. There is also a memorial to the 2013 terrorist attack and an old chimney incinerator used to destroy decommissioned banknotes. • The good thing with Karura is you can never get tired as there are many routes to exit such as passing the waterfall and just posing, the cave which is great as well. the River Cafe is a have-to-go...

  • We spent a wonderful afternoon walking through the forest, visiting the waterfall and eating at the River Cafe. The forest is beautiful and tranquil and felt safe. Would highly recommend.

  • The place was cool and awesome. The only problem is that there are no hotels where tourists can get lunch from. No plastic bags/bottles allowed inside.
  • Awesome as always. First timers will get lost so don't go late. Test the bikes thoroughly if you're going to cycle.
