The World Heritage Site of Fort Jesus Museum ranks among the best-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture. Built in 1593 by Portuguese settlers, from a bird's-eye view the fort resembles the form of a man--believed to be Jesus--lying with his head facing out to sea. Tour this national treasure and learn its history, from its defense barracks to its 19th-century prison. Guides are available at the entrance to enrich your appreciation of the impressive fortification, which includes Portuguese, British, and Arab influences. • A historic place not to miss while in Mombasa, for the lovers of History this is a great place to visit and learn about the Portuguese and Oman during the early days. There are tours guides nearby who help you and explain how the place came into existence. It's also has a nice view of the ocean from the top.
  • A wonderful historical site for the coastal heritage. However, I found it disturbing that it had barely the minimum concerning the black coastal inhabitants who also lived in the environment while explaining all about the Omani Arabs and Portuguese. Otherwise it was a fun place for lovers of history.
