Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Johannesburg: Balloon Rides (in Muldersdrift), Croc City Crocodile and Reptile Park (in Fourways) and Midrand (Lory Park & Nizamiye Mosque). Spend the 7th (Sat) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. Spend the 13th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's still lots to do: examine the collection at Apartheid Museum, contemplate the long history of Constitution Hill, try to win big at Montecasino, and learn about all things military at South African National Museum of Military History.
