Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Step out of Johannesburg to go to Pretoria and see National Library of South Africa, which is approximately 56 minutes away. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Apartheid Museum, get engrossed in the history at Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct, steep yourself in history at Mandela House, and try to win big at Montecasino.
