Gateway to the Lowveld

Nestled on the banks of the Crocodile River, Nelspruit provides visitors with a convenient base point boasting two airports and an enviable location on the road between Johannesburg and the Mozambican border.
Visit Shangana Cultural Village and Matsamo Cultural Village for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Graskop (Panorama Route & Wonder View) and Elephant Whispers (in Hazyview). The adventure continues: Head underground at Sudwala Caves, look for gifts at Africa Joy, and examine the collection at Sudwala Dinosaur Park.

For ratings, other places to visit, photos, and other tourist information, read Nelspruit trip itinerary planner.

Johannesburg to Nelspruit is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Johannesburg in August, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Nelspruit, with lows around 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sun) to allow enough time to travel back home.

Hike through the world's third-highest canyon, and the only green one in the world; explore the world's oldest cave; and witness the diverse wildlife in the many reserves of Mpumalanga. This "place where the sun rises," as the name means in local tongues, features stunning mountain scenery, lush valleys, and charming towns with refreshingly cool weather. Mpumalanga's attractions draw crowds of visitors from far and wide: follow the trails of the 19th-century gold rush in old gold-seeker's towns, rappel down a waterfall, or just take a dip in the pools below after a hike through the rainforests.
