Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Take a break from the city and head to Safaris and Sterkfontein Cave. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct and Kromdraai Gold Mine. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Apartheid Museum, steep yourself in history at Mandela House, and take a stroll through Maboneng Precinct.
