Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Attractions like Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct make great kid-friendly stops. Take a break from Johannesburg with a short trip to Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, about 46 minutes away.
