Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Step out of the city life by going to Safaris and Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre. Discover out-of-the-way places like Ukutula Conservation Center and Union Buildings. Step out of Johannesburg with an excursion to National Library of South Africa in Pretoria--about 56 minutes away. Get outdoors at Boulders Beach Penguin Colony and Twelve Apostles. Step off the beaten path and head to Stony Point Penguin Colony and Platteklip Gorge. When in Cape Town, make a side trip to see Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens in Betty's Bay, approximately Betty's Bay away. There's still lots to do: admire all the interesting features of Cape Point, steep yourself in history at Robben Island Museum, stroll through Bloubergstrand Beach, and kick back and relax at Clifton Beaches.
