Johannesburg

— 13 nights

City of Light

Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.
Get out of town with these interesting Johannesburg side-trips: Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (The Cradle of Humankind & Sterkfontein Cave), Pretoria (Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument, &more) and Zipline (in Rustenburg). Spend the 4th (Fri) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. Spend the 11th (Fri) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Apartheid Museum, find something for the whole family at Gold Reef City, try to win big at Montecasino, and wander the streets of Maboneng Precinct.

For photos, reviews, traveler tips, and other tourist information, refer to the Johannesburg trip planner.

If you are flying in from The Netherlands, the closest major aiports are OR Tambo International Airport and Pilanesberg International Airport. Expect a daytime high around 32°C in October, and nighttime lows around 13°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel back home.
