City of Light
Founded when gold was discovered in the area in the late 19th century, Johannesburg quickly grew into a bustling metropolis, South Africa's largest city and the region's economic hub.Get out of town with these interesting Johannesburg side-trips: Lion and Safari Park (in Broederstroom), The Ugly Duckling (in Hartbeespoort) and Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site (The Cradle of Humankind & Sterkfontein Cave). Spend the 22nd (Thu) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. Spend the 29th (Thu) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's much more to do: examine the collection at Apartheid Museum, brush up on your military savvy at South African National Museum of Military History, make a trip to Nelson Mandela Square, and try to win big at Gold Reef City.
