See artifacts from the Mahdi era at Khalifa House Museum, along with the Mahdi's silver-domed tomb next to it. Abdallahi Ibn Mohammed aka Khalifa lived here, and because of being a prominent figure, they made a museum from his house. Built in the late 19th century, but established in 1924, the museum takes you back to the period from 1881 to 1899, and you can see different artifacts documenting it. In most rooms, you can learn about important battles and local leaders. See photos, weapons, and clothing worn back then.     Visited on a Friday. Closed. From the outside it looks like they are doing maintenance or restoration. There is a knocked over sign with a little information. Right next to Madhi's tomb.  more »

    This house belonged to the Khalifah who was the successor of the Mahdi. It is now a museum of the time. It contains a range of weapons & artefacts such as General Gordon's chair. It also has a letter....  more »

    It really requires about an hour and a half to go through. There aren't a lot of written facts or much coherency to the narrative, in my opinion. However, I did gain a solid background and I think I would have appreciated it 10x fold if I had done extra reading before going. Very neat artifacts and special notes about Khalifa history and the house uses. If you go to Sudan, you must stop by.
