Maclear's Beacon
Marking the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclear's Beacon offers sweeping views of Cape Town and its surroundings. The beacon was originally built in 1865 as a triangulation station and is still used by cartographers today. The hike up via the Skelton Gorge route is an adventure in its own right, while walking up from the Upper Cable Car Station is much easier. In any case, you will get to enjoy the views, so be sure to bring your camera. Maclear's Beacon is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

It just had to be done and so I started a plan to get to the highest point in Cape Town. I took a bus to Cape town then afterward connected with a Myciti bus from Adderley street to Kloofnek bus... more »

From the top of the cableway, it is an easy walk along the top to McLears beacon which is easily seen. Trainers or waling shoes pretty essential, don’t try it in flip flops!. Well worth the extra... more »

We did a 3 hour hike around the top of the table mountain with our guide for the day Tim Lundy. He was very knowledgeable and able to point out various features, plants, wildlife etc that we would never have known about. If you have the time, then do more than just go up in the cable car and walk around the small area at the top and return. There are some great walks up there which you can take, but do be prepared because the weather can change rapidly or use a guide like Tim who I would not hesitate to recommend. Just one thing, we ended up in a queue for tickets for the cable car for 2 hours. So get your tickets in advance and if you do have to queue, then get one of your party to get the tickets whilst the rest of the party wait in the queue.

Nearly no other people there. I walked there barefoot. Incredible experience. Also I found a place with carpenter bees, Bumblebees and a black Salamander, so watch your step.
