Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, Moremela

#1 of 54 in Wildlife in Mpumalanga
Canyon · Nature / Park
The third largest canyon in the world, Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve remains best known for its remarkable viewing spots and peculiar geological features. Located within a nature reserve, the sandstone canyon was a popular site in the 19th century, when it attracted prospectors in search of gold and fortune--today, it's one of Africa's top tourist destinations. As you reach one of many viewpoints, notice how the river-water erosion has carved cylindrical stone sculptures and made rock pools scattered all over the area. Examine more than 1,000 species of plant life as you hike through the lush forest, and look out for samango monkeys, baboons, and other primates roaming about.
