#6 of 51 in Parks in Greater Johannesburg
Nature / Park · Hidden Gem · Wildlife Area
Explore the elaborate system of limestone caves at The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site just 50 km (31 mi) northwest of Johannesburg. Probably the world's most significant palaeontological site, this protected area covers 470 sq km (180 sq mi), including the location in which the 2.3-million-year-old fossil called "Mrs. Ples" was discovered in the 1940s. Be sure to start or end your tour at the visitor center, where you'll find restaurants, cafes, accommodations, and access to additional activities, like hot air ballooning and horse trails. Most Johannesburg tour operators offer guided excursions to the area--you can also visit it in your own car, if you don't mind driving the short distance from the city.
