Jardin de l'Etat, Saint-Denis

Nature / Park · Garden
Jardin de l'Etat invites you to discover a variety of exotic trees from around the world, including the talipot palm with the world's largest inflorescence. The famous French horticulturalist Pierre Poivre (look for his bust) brought to the island most of the trees and spices you see flourishing here in the second half of the 18th century. Thanks to Poivre and a group of 19th-century botanists, the garden today includes baobabs, sausage trees, fountain palms, and looking-glass mangroves, among others. Visit the onsite natural history museum, which opened on the premises of a former colonial council in 1855.
