Twyfelfontein, Damaraland

#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in Namibia
Listed as the country's first World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein contains peculiar rock engravings, petroglyphs, and paintings. Inhabited for more than 6,000 years, the site provided a home for hunter-gatherer tribes that probably conducted shamanistic rituals at this location--their imagery and pictograms remain scattered about. As you explore the protected site, observe the diverse rock art that portrays wild animals, footprints, and symbols of an ancient belief system. • We visited Twyfelfontein with an excursion from Camp Kipwe. The guided tour was very interesting and the walk beautiful - the stone carvings are located in a rocky area which is beautiful  more »
  • Of interest primarily because of their age. Site best visited late afternoon, when the sun highlights the carvings. Site quite accessible, and a guide or good guidebook is a must.  more »
